WFP Deputy Executive Director Sheila Sisulu Talks about HIV/AIDS and Nutrition
In a recent interview, Sheila Sisulu, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Program, stressed that adequate nutrition is essential to the health of patients infected with HIV/AIDS.
“While good nutrition cannot cure AIDS or prevent HIV infection, it can help to maintain and improve the nutritional status of a person with HIV/AIDS and delay the progression from HIV to AIDS,” said Sisulu.
Anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) are often prescribed to HIV/AIDS patients to help alleviate the damaging effects of the virus. But this medication must be taken with food or they will not be effective. In countries where hunger is the norm, HIV/AIDS is particularly destructive.
