Hunger crisis update from Kyrgyzstan to Haiti

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is providing aid to victims of the ethnic conflict in Kyrgyzstan. Fighting in the city of Osh had forced many people to barricade themselves into their neighborhoods. Many others fled  to Uzbekistan.......

Edesia, a Rhode Island based producer of ready-to-eat foods, sent the 1.8 million packets of supplementary plumpy. The World Food Programme will be distributing the plumpy to 30,000 individuals within Haiti as part of its food relief operation.

A Message to the G-8 Summit: Remember June, 1946

When President Obama and other world leaders gather this week in Canada at the G-8 summit, they can make history.  To do so they can draw some inspiration from the past.  Hopefully, our leaders know their history.

Let’s go back in time to Ottawa, Canada on June 28th, 1946.  Herbert Hoover, serving as a food ambassador for President Truman, had just finished touring the world, assessing with his team the post-World War II hunger crisis.  Hoover made a speech in Ottawa, calling for an all-out effort to fight the child hunger that was ravaging nation after nation.  Hoover said, “millions of mothers are today watching their children wilt before their eyes… We cannot have recovery of civilization in nations with a legacy of stunted bodies or distorted and embittered minds.”

A Cup of UNICEF Can Change the World

The next time you go into a grocery store to buy milk, you could call it a carton of UNICEF. Sounds a bit strange? Actually, children in Europe after World War II would sometimes refer to milk as a "cup of UNICEF."

UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, came about because children in the war-torn countries were in desperate need of food. The war caused such great destruction, many basic items like milk were in short supply.

This crisis received top-level attention from the U.S. government. In 1946 President Harry Truman dispatched a team led by Herbert Hoover to help the countries in ruin. Their trip, and seeing the needs of hungry children, helped to inspire the creation of UNICEF.

World Food Programme ramps up food deliveries for victims of Kyrgyzstan crisis

BISHKEK – The United Nations World Food Programme is delivering desperately needed food to thousands of people fleeing violent clashes, many of whom are trapped in neighbourhoods in southern Kyrgyzstan’s main city Osh.

“With a huge number of people displaced by the conflict, and thousands more trapped without food, water or supplies, there’s not a moment to lose,” said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, announcing that the agency planned to airlift food into Kyrgyzstan and neighbouring Uzbekistan over the weekend to augment food distributions already underway.
